The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM)


The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) is a standardized method of evaluation for music studies across North America with over 5 million alumni.


This is a 12 level course (Levels 1 – 10; ARCT diploma in Performance or Teaching,  Theory & Composition; and a Licentiate Diploma) designed to educate students with a range of music skills and benefits, which will carry on through to subsequent careers:

  • Achievement in the Certificate Program of Royal Conservatory Examinations is considered an important element in entrance requirements for professional music programs at many universities and colleges across North America.

WHY take RCM Theory Exams?

  • Knowledge of theory will increase the ability to sight read, which helps you learn songs more quickly. This will enable you to proceed through your levels much more enjoyably.
  • Music becomes more interesting when you understand it more clearly. Knowledge of theory will help you appreciate the pieces you play or sing.
  • Learning theory helps you communicate with other musicians in a common language, especially when collaborating and playing together.
  • All RCM students of a musical instrument (including voice) require theory co-requisites to receive their Level 5 – ARCT Certificates
