Jovian Cheng was born in Hong Kong and moved to Vancouver, B.C at a young age where he began his early music studies with Peggy Yip in Richmond. He then studied with Sasha Starcevich for a number of years before entering the UBC School of Music where he finished his Bachelor of Music for Piano Performance under the tutelage of Amanda Chan. Jovian’s past instructors include Sara Davis Buechner and Ian Parker. He was also one of only three local pianists chosen to participate in a master class with Lang Lang. Jovian has competed extensively and has won first prize at countless competitions including the Seattle Young Artists Music Festival Concerto Competition, the Performing Arts BC Provincial Competition Senior Division, the Third North West Piano Ensemble Competition, CBC Radio’s Battle of Beethoven, as well as the Canadian Music Competition.
Jovian has enjoyed performing as a soloist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra twice, the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra, and the Northwest Philharmonia Orchestra. He also participated in the Charity Ice Breaking Care Society Piano Concert at the Chan Centre to raise money for victims of the Sichuan earthquake.
Being a firm believer in the fostering of musical interest in young children, Jovian encourages his students to perform as often as possible. His own students have competed and achieved awards at the provincial and national level as well as outstanding results on their RCM Examinations.
